What Benifit Is It For Americans To Learn Spanish ?

really, in what way wouldit improve this country ??
I feel the time it would take to learn Spanish would be better spent learning a skill that could be applied in the real world.
Please no answers like” So we can talk and understand the feelings of the illegal immigrants ” .

No benefit for me. And I’d rather die than learn that language. It should be them learning ENGLISH- not us learning Spanish. It’s oh so backwards…..
It DOES benefit to learn another language.
BUT, that decision to learn a new language, and which language should be of an individuals’ choosing.
No one should be forced to learn a language whose sole purpose is to wet-nurse those who are too lazy and ignorant to learn the national language of, and refuse to integrate into the country they chose to reside in, regardless of legal status.

i know legal people who speak only spanish. If you’re running a business and u’re clients are MOSTLY hispanic, it would be VERY beneficial to learn spanish, it would infact be a “SKILL THAT COULD BE APPLIED IT THE REAL WORLD”.
Depending on the type of business you have, i think that spanish and chinese are the languages you should focus on
I have found no benefit, but near the end of my undergrad studies it seemed more common to find job postings for span/eng speakers so I was forced to learn. I know you stated you didn’t want any comment regarding illegals. Well, this is not just illegals. There are many others who are legal and THEY refused to learn our language. As such our stupid government feels we must accomodate them and be sensitive to their culture. We are the only stupid nation in the world who feels pity for other cultures and language barriers. Go to Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc… and you better know some Spanish. And in my opinion why should they? We are in there territory which is what we should finally adopt. You are in our territory learn English or remain unemployed eating dirt.

What about the Spanish speaking want ads in the newspaper or the extra dollar and hour if you know how to speak Spanish now that really pisses me off. I like all people, but you don’t see English speaking only ads. because that might offend someone and the ACLU would be all over that. Double standards is really what this country stands for and all those politically correct answers that we’ve been bullied in to using. Free speach and thought as long as you follow the rules. It is 10 times easier to learn spanish(which is a very simple and easy to use language) than it is for those from other countries to learn English as English is one of the hardest languages to speak. We have too many letters that are silent, and letters that when put in certain words, sound completely different than when they are alone. It’s very confusing!!! All countries could benefit from learning another language since we constantly do business with other countries.
None. If you go to work in the Latin American Countries, you have to find out the subtleties of the corruption before you can do business, and then you need to be trusted. But that would be THE reason for learning the language.

Most Hispanics (Spanish Speakers) do not speak Spanish actually. They have dialects.. they have a great deal of difficulty passing Spanish Classes, and there is a huge amount of slang along the border, but through out Mexico for example.
And while there may be 48 million people speaking Spanish in this country, when 30 million illegal aliens go home, very, very few people will speak Spanish. But the folks who do speak their version of Spanish desperately want US to speak Spanish because they cannot learn to speak English.
And yes… all the versions of Spanish make that a widely spoken language in the world. But when you look, the majority of the people speaking Spanish speak a mixture that is actually 20% Spanish, and 80% local dialog (Indian Dialects throughout Spanish America).
Chinese, I think, is the most widely spoken language in the world. English is number two. It may pass Chinese soon because so many Chinese are speaking English now. (There are many dialects in China and one dialect cannot always be understood by another dialect….) English is the compromise common business language in China, India, Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia.
What can you say? You can yahoo that, by the way. World Common Language.
It is of no particular greater benefit to learn Spanish vs. any other foreign language in the U.S.. College students (and many high school students) take a foreign language of their choice, as should be.
We have many millions of people that speak literally dozens of languages in the U.S., so suggesting that we learn another language so we can communicate with these people is ludicrous.
They learn our language, not the other way around.
Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian…shall I go on??
It is good to learn a foreign langauge, but suggesting that ALL Americans should learn one particular foreign language is wrong.

Any language that is NOT English in the U.S. is foreign. The common language in the U.S. is ENGLISH. PERIOD.
Any immigrants in the U.S. not willing or not able to learn English will be isolated from communicating with the vast majority of citizens of this country.

I can some benefits of us learning Spanish. But I see even more benefits of them learning English. That way we can stop bending over backwards for them.
When my great grandparents came over here from Sweden and Romania. Did people have food labels and what not written in Swedish and Romanian? They got no special treatment whatsoever. So I think the immigrants should learn and speak English just like everyone else who has immigrated here from a different language speaking country.
Darlin it wouldn’t ‘benefit’ those who can barely speak or write their native tongue much at all. However, evidently as per our school curriculum’s, a foreign language of any type is beneficial to all. Unless you plan on living an insulated insular world.
Well…I like to travel, so I love to learn languages. I also work with preschool children, many whose families speak Spanish but have limited English. They are not illegals, they are here legally (mostly as migrant workers - with all the required LEGAL paperwork) and it sure helps to be able to communicate to these parents when I see them. Otherwise, I’d be using state money to get an interpreter. FYI, that is the real world. The children I work with have special needs, and require the services we provide. Don’t you dare say that this is not ‘real’. It’s likely more real than your work. Are you under the completely false assumption that anyone who speaks Spanish is illegal?? If so, please do a bit of research first.

learning a second language is fine. I just don’t think it has to be Spanish.
The only benefit it gives anyone is those who refuse to speak English. It doesn’t benefit us in any way,it panders to people who obviously have no love nor loyalty to this country.

I didnt learn spanish because I wanted to,it was forced upon me in school.I agree,history was a far better lesson.
It really helps when you are working in a factory which has become about 70% Mexican with about 30% being illegal.
It is really nice when you can understand the insults, understand when they are talking dirty about your wife, and know when they laugh at you for busting your *ss.
Everyone likes to say how hard they work, I have heard them talk about slowing down so they could get overtime to finish the job.
It also is very good when you are their supervisor in a meat processing plant and you have to crawl inside a bone crusher machine.
If you can comunicate in Spanish then they have no reason to laugh and claim they did not understand your directions after they turn it on and cause you to almost be crushed.
They had started jamming the machine on purpose after I streamlined the process to avoid overtime for my company.
I messed with their overtime profits, they tried to kill me.
These thing have all happened to me, that is part of why I hate illegals worse than I did before, and also why I refuse to work any where if they are hired by managment.
So that the illegals can continue to actually make us believe that WE are obligated to assimilate to THEIR ways and that THEY are ENTITLED to whatever else they want.
Other than that…nothing. The top 5 international business languages…not ONE is Spanish.

I think the obvious reason is the same one anyone uses for learning a language. It’s something to put on the resume. It broadens the mind. It’s a useful tool to have, and although you said you didn’t want to hear it, it’s inevitably going to help americans communicate with the large number of mexican immigrants in the country……I am though, a firm believer in “My country - my language” and would strongly favour all mexicans having to speak english if they wish to live in america.
there are alot of benefits, and not only illegal immigrants speak spanish…. anyway, it’s good for business incase you have to speak to peope from other countries like spain or anywhere in latin america. i dont think its very necessary here in the US since i believe that everyone who comes to this coungry should learn the national language, its only fair. but i totally disgree with you saying that its useless to learn a foreign language, i have noticed that people from other countries find it important and you meet alot of them who know almost 6 languages. Learning different languages can help you very much in college, work and just to learn morre about different people. Its not a useless subject, people pay alot for translators too so its a good thing. im sure you dont have a problem with people learning french in school, or german etc. you just chose spanish because you think people Think yoou should speak it because of both legal and illegal immigrants who dont speak english. or you just chose it because you have a problem with people who speak spanish or just think its a “lower” language”
In some states it helps you get a job, but in truth we need to consider refusing to learn Spanish. Languages are taught in our high schools and colleges. I learned German. There are many languages of the world to consider.
it does nothing for me, I’m required to speak unaccented English (ATC)…my wife, who works in medicine, get’s paid extra for it though…the public must be served
